background
Essen is a city in the center of the Ruhr area with a population of almost 570,000. Although its history goes back a long way, it was only from the middle of the 19th century that it grew from the small town to the large industrial city with a population of 750,000.
The meaning of the city name is unclear, probably it means "place in the east".
The classic heavy industry, for which food was famous, has been subject to structural change since the 1970s. Only a few symbols remain from the former mining. Steel production is no longer as important as it used to be. Like the rest of the Ruhr area, food is affected by migration. Between 1990 and 2008 alone, the population fell by almost 50,000.
Today, Essen is a city of services and administration. Several large companies are based in Essen. The city is classified as a high center.

by train
Essen is well connected to the railway network, the new 1main railway station in the center of the city, which was rebuilt in 2009, is the ICE stop. Trains stop at Essen's main station in all directions, including direct connections to Vienna (ICE), Zurich (EC), Berlin (ICE), Munich (ICE), Hamburg (IC), Aachen via Cologne, Hamm, Münster (DB regional traffic), Siegen (Abellio Rail). With local and long-distance trains you can reach all the important cities of the Ruhr area as well as Düsseldorf in a short time.

The journey time to Brussels is about 2.5 hours and to Paris 4 hours (3 trains per day). Furthermore, the Flixtrain goes to Duisburg, Düsseldorf, Cologne, Gelsenkirchen, Münster and Hamburg from Thursday to Monday 1 to 2 times a day (sometimes on Tuesdays and Wednesdays).

In summer, food can be reached regularly by boat from Mülheim an der Ruhr. In addition to a regular service, excursions along the Ruhr with coffee and cake are also offered [1]. The Rhine-Herne Canal also provides regular services, but only on Wednesdays and Saturdays and only from June to October. The line links the Nordsternpark in Gelsenkirchen with the Kaisergarten in Oberhausen[2].
mobility
There are buses, trams, S-Bahn and U-Bahn trains as well as taxis within the city. Public transport stops from about 1:30 am to the next morning, but on weekends and public holidays so-called night express buses run at hourly intervals.
Interesting means of transport in Essen is the tram line 107, also called cultural line 107. The tram runs from Gelsenkirchen Hbf via Zollverein and Essen Hbf to Essen-Bredeney. You can find information about the sights at the respective stop on the train and at the stops. On the website you will find detailed information about the 45-minute route, the 57 attractions visited, the possible tickets (in the normal EVAG/VRR tariff), the timetable and as a special highlight also the ListenTour 107. The free audio book (60 MB, MP3 files) has an audio contribution of one to two minutes for each station. From A as Aaltotheater to Z as Zeche Zollverein, many points of the route of industrial culture are explained. There is also a pocket book (see literature below).
By bicycle
- Essen is part of the bicycle rental system metropolradruhr. At numerous automatic stations in ten towns in the Ruhr region, simple three-way wheels can be rented and returned somewhere else. The system is operated by the company Nextbike. More information about Nextbike and metropolitan watch under Bike Sharing.

Essen itself is called the "shopping city" and has one of the first and largest pedestrian streets in Germany, made up of Kettwiger Straße, Viehofer Strasse and Limbeck Street, and the small streets between them. From November onwards the Essen Christmas market and the Essen Light Weeks start, attracting numerous visitors from home and abroad every year.
The city hall Galerie Essen, a shopping center with small and medium-sized shops, is located at the Porscheplatz in the city center.
The newly opened shopping center Limbecker Platz with stores from Saturn, C&A, Karstadt and numerous other chains is significantly larger.
South of the main railway station, the Rüttenscheider Strasse goes. It is a shopping and shopping street with cafés, restaurants and (mostly smaller) shops of all kinds, and is also located in the neighborhood. Those who want to shop during the day or go out in the evening are right here, for example after a visit to the nearby Philharmonie, Messe, Gruga or the Folkwang Museum.
In the northern Altenessen district is the Allee Center, a medium-sized shopping center.
In some districts there are traditional weekly markets on individual weekdays and especially on Saturdays. The Rüttenscheider market at the Klarastraße, the Altenessener Markt or the Katernberger Markt are particularly noteworthy. Here, Essen's gourmets are supplied with fresh food and the neighbors of the area are provided with daily necessities. The markets are operated by the Verwertungs- und BetriebsGmbH (EVB), which also offers a list of all weekly markets (with dates, arrivals). There is a weekly market (only fresh food and flowers) on Tuesdays and Fridays in the city center.

Due to its central location, you can reach almost every point in North Rhine-Westphalia in one to two hours by car or train from Essen. Within the nearby Ruhrgebiet/Düsseldorf you can visit numerous attractions and take advantage of the entire leisure infrastructure of the metropolitan area in a short time.
If food shopping is not enough, the Mülheimer Rhein-Ruhr-Zentrum or the Oberhausener Centro (Oberhausener Centro), two of the largest shopping centers in Germany, are only a few kilometers away.
Bochum offers the most successful musical performance in the world with Starlight Express. More than 12 million visitors since 1988 have posted the Guinness Book of the Andrew Lloyd Webber track.
Also in Bochum is the Mining Museum with an underground show mine. The Planetarium Bochum is equipped with 300 seats on a high level. It is hidden in a side street. Since you are sometimes not allowed in late, you should leave early.
The Delfinarium Zoo in Duisburg with zoos and the Zoom Experience World in Gelsenkirchen, created for several hundred million euros from the former Ruhr Zoo, are worth seeing. With the Sea Life Oberhausen and the perhaps even more interesting Düsseldorf Aquazoo there are two zoos for the underwater world.
With the Schalker Veltins Arena you can visit one of the most modern football stadiums in the world and visit the Schalke Museum there. The Dortmund Stadium, the Signal-Iduna Park, which can seat over 80,000 visitors, also offers guided tours.
Theater fans can choose from one of the most dense stage landscapes in Europe. Many famous actors and directors have grown up here. Among the many large and small theaters, perhaps the best proxy could be the Schauspielhaus Bochum and the Mülheimer Theater an der Ruhr, as well as the Düsseldorf Commödchen as a cabaret stage.

Dortmund is home to the DASA German Workers' Exhibition. What sounds dusty is in fact a very large technical museum with a high fun factor for children and adults.
The former Oberhausen gas-meter, located right next to the Centro, is now home to temporary exhibitions and is a widely visible landmark of the Ruhr area with its 117 meters altitude.
Duisburg is home to the Landscape Park Duisburg-Nord, a former metallurgical plant. The grounds are freely accessible, but there are also guided tours. Especially spectacular is the night lighting on weekends and public holidays.
Movie Park Germany is a large amusement park in Bottrop with numerous roller coasters and other rides.
The metropolises of the Rhineland are also nearby, Düsseldorf is also close by, with the famous shopping mile Königsallee (Kö) and the old town, where you can enjoy your old beer, Cologne is just a short distance away with the cathedral and many other sights.
